With its rich cultural and traditional heritage, Asian art has always been beloved and coveted throughout the world. Not only does it apply to masterpieces of the past, but it also applies to contemporary Asian art that has long proven to be both innovative and inspirational. In this blog post, we are delighted to tell you about Lei Yan, a contemporary Chinese master whose work explores the relationship between the artist, culture, and art. We would also like to draw your attention to Yan’s amazing series of paintings, titled “Color Wheel.”
The Amazing “Color Wheel” Series of Paintings by Lei Yan
Lei Yan (b. 1965) is a painter, photographer, and conceptual artist based in Beijing, China. He studied arts at Hebei School for Arts and Crafts and later at the China Academy of Art (previously known as the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts) from where he graduated in 1991. Today, Lei Yan is one of the most prominent contemporary Chinese artists working across different mediums, from painting and photography to video art and installation. His artworks have been exhibited at a number of international exhibitions and shows, including the LA Art Show, the Sao Paulo Biennale, the Gwangju Biennale, and the Venice Biennale.
“Color Wheel” is one of the most notable series of paintings by Lei Yan. These works begin with photographs, digitally reduced by the artist to reveal their own artificiality through a narrow color range, and are presented with the added effect of lenticular printing. The digital technology here serves as an additional medium that helps warp the color rings that turn into abstract monochromes when approaching them.
Lei Yan says, “Painting, after all, is just a mindless representation of an image you might see in a photograph, the process of making that painting has become superfluous.” “Color Wheel” series of paintings perfectly reinforces the artist’s position.
Lei Yan is represented by Gallery All in Beijing and Los Angeles. Be sure to contact the gallery for more information about the artist and his amazing works.
