Unique Mixed Media Art of Buhle Nkalashe
Buhle Nkalashe is an independent artist born in Cape Town in 1994. After graduating from the Cape Town Creative Academy in 2018 with a BA in Graphic Design, Nkalashe worked in advertising for some time but quickly realized that his true passion was in the arts. Today, the young artist is mainly known for his mixed media art that has already been showcased at a number of exhibitions in Cape Town and Johannesburg, including a solo show titled “The New African” at Youngblood Africa Gallery.
Buhle Nkalashe works in portraiture and abstract painting, combining different mediums (oil paint, acrylic paint, charcoal, and oil pastels) to create his unique pieces. His art is inspired by various rituals and cultural ceremonies, mostly of the Xhosa nation. The artist explores the impact of these traditional patterns on the identity and mindset of the young Africans and their significant contribution to the contemporary style society. Thus, Nkalashe’s artworks are a celebration of both authentic African art and community progress, with reference to many advances made by the young African creatives through art, music, and fashion.
