Portland, ME, has a thriving contemporary art scene, especially in the city’s downtown district. From art museums to artist-operated cooperatives and independent art galleries, Portland can offer something for any taste. However, at Fine Art Shippers, we would like to recommend that you visit the beautiful Portland Art Gallery located at 154 Middle Street.
Portland Art Gallery
Portland Art Gallery is a relatively young gallery that was founded in 2014. It is located in the heart of the historic Old Port waterfront district of Portland, a truly amazing place with 19th-century brick architecture and cobblestone streets. The gallery features two airy and spacious exhibition rooms with large windows, allowing the natural light to flood into its modern space.
Just like many other galleries in Portland, Portland Art Gallery specializes in contemporary art, but what makes this gallery unique is that it is focused on the work of established and emerging artists who are based in or share a connection to Maine. In particular, the gallery features artworks by Philip Barter, Sonya Sklaroff, Deborah Randall, Douglas H Caves Sr., Jill Hoy, and other contemporary talents in one way to another related to Maine.
Art exhibitions at Portland Art Gallery change monthly, with opening receptions held on the first Thursday of the month. The current exhibition dedicated to the work of Matthew Russ, Daniel Corey, and Leon Anderson is on view through April 28, and it is definitely worth visiting. Very recommended by Fine Art Shippers!
