Billy Gerard Frank, a Multi-Talented Multimedia Artist from Grenada
Billy Gerard Frank is a contemporary multimedia artist and filmmaker. Originally from Grenada, he moved to London as a teenager, where he immersed himself in the world of experimental art for the first time. Frank later went to New York and became a student and assistant of the renowned American painter John Hultberg before becoming a full-fledged artist of his own. His work has been exhibited at numerous museums and galleries around the world and is currently included in major museums’ permanent collections. The artist also represented his home country, Grenada, at the 58th and 59th editions of the Venice Biennale. Besides, Billy Gerard Frank is a lecturer in the Directing and Design program at the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale and a visiting lecturer at NYU, the School of Visual Arts in New York, and York University.
Billy Gerard Frank describes his art as “hinged” on his experiences as a queer person of Afropean and Caribbean heritage. In his work, the artist explores deeply personal issues and the questions of race, exile, memory, and colonialism, drawing from his complex background to create “counter-histories” that disrupt the norms constructed by those in positions of power.
Apart from being a gifted and prolific mixed-media artist, Billy Gerard Frank is well-known for his video art and installations. His love for filmmaking led him to create the Nova Frontier Film Festival & Lab (NFFF), a project dedicated to showcasing works by filmmakers and artists from the global African diaspora, the Middle East, and Latin America. NFFF offers rich programming with workshops and discussion panels focusing on pressing social issues in film, performance, and new media art. A self-described “incubator and hub,” the festival aims to support aspiring and emerging filmmakers as they navigate the industry.
Billy Gerard Frank is an incredible, multi-talented artist and filmmaker. Fine Art Shippers is beyond honored to know him personally and support him. We cannot wait to see more of Frank’s work in the future.
