Stephen Cimini is an NYC-based artist originally from Williamsport, PA. Though he studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and the San Francisco Art Institute, Cimini identifies himself as a self-taught artist who explores various geometric shapes and their relationship to each other.
Stephen Cimini started his art career taking photographs of the crumbling buildings and new structures that appeared during the rebuilding of Times Square in the late 1990s, which he would later use as inspiration for his geometric compositions. The old interiors with their many textures also influenced the artist’s choice of materials and eventually led him to use a mix of cold wax and oil paint in his work. Thus, Stephen Cimini’s signature architectural abstract art was born.
“Embracing Boundaries” is the latest series of works by Stephen Cimini. Focused on texture and color, it represents a collection of abstract paintings with a similar geometric composition applied to canvases of different aspect ratios and sizes.
“Ancient Modern” is another notable series of Cimini’s works, which is distinguished by a perfect combination of ancient arabesque Islamic art in the background and modern geometric constructions evoking robot-like biomorphic shapes.
Stephen Cimini has received many awards and grants, including from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. He has also recently been nominated in the Painting-Abstract Category for the Global Art Awards 2021 in Tokyo. Works by Cimini are in many private collections worldwide. The artist exhibits his vibrant architectural abstract art throughout the US and is represented by Carter Burden Gallery in New York.
