Wassily Kandinsky is largely known as a Russian artist who was one of the forerunners of the abstract art movement. However, not many people remember that he spent his formative years in Odesa, Ukraine, which was part of the Russian Empire back then. To support the Ukrainian people who are suffering from the horrible consequences of the ongoing war, the religious leadership of Porto, Portugal, organized a showing of 15 works by the famous artist. The Kandinsky exhibition opened on November 21 at Torre dos Clérigos, a beautiful 18th-century church in Porto. The event was attended by important figures in politics, religion, and culture, including the Ukrainian artist Iryna Fedorenko.
The New Wassily Kandinsky Exhibition Opened in Porto, Portugal
“Kandinsky: The Bauhaus Album Rediscovered” is a show featuring 15 sketches from the artist’s sketchbook that he used at the Bauhaus. The Kandinsky exhibition was created in collaboration with the Kyiv National Museum (Kyiv Art Gallery) and moved to Portugal with the help of the local clergy. A generous donation was made from the name of Torre dos Clérigos to the American Fund of Ukrainian Reconstruction. The foundation was set up to aid Ukrainians in recovering from the damage that the war caused to their infrastructure, economy, and daily lives.
The opening event saw the participation of government representatives, spiritual leaders, and international ambassadors, such as the Ukrainian consulate in Porto. Iryna Fedorenko, a.k.a. SEMIRA, an established Ukrainian artist, was among the distinguished guests at the event as an art expert and representative of the American Fund of Ukrainian Reconstruction. On behalf of the foundation and to thank the religious leaders of Porto for their generosity, the artist gifted them one of her newest paintings. Fedorenko has also received a key to Torre dos Clérigos as a gift in return.
Like many Ukrainians, Iryna Fedorenko was forced to flee her home country after the war started. Currently based in Munich, Germany, she continues to make thought-provoking paintings and emotional portraits. Fedorenko’s latest creation from her series “Spirits” will take its well-deserved place in the collection of Torre dos Clérigos.
The Kandinsky exhibition will be on view through March 17, 2024. Do not miss a chance to view exclusive works of art by one of the most influential artists in history and enjoy the showstopping interior of Torre dos Clérigos.
