Lionel Samson Reiss (1894-1988) was a Polish-American painter of Jewish descent. Reiss studied commercial art in Manhattan and was known for numerous iconic art objects he created as a commercial artist for newspapers, publishers, and motion picture companies. He was also the author of the Leo the Lion logo for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios. The featured painting, “Hot Tar,” is signed to verso with the Associated American Artists label and comes in a giltwood frame.
Lot #100: “Nude Woman” by Szilard Constantinus Kovari, Oil on Board

Szilard Constantinus Kovari (1882-1916) was a Hungarian painter of Slovakian origin. He was credited with pioneering the development of a formal program for modern Slovak fine arts in the early 20th century. His brief but influential creative activity affected the local Košice modernist movement of the 1920s. “Nude Woman” is an illustrative example of Kovari’s work at the intersection of Art Nouveau impressionism and syntheticism.
Lot #41: “Salome” by Charles Levy, Patinated Bronze Sculpture
Estimated value: $1,500-$2,500
Charles-Octave Levy (1820-1899) was a French sculptor born in Paris and trained by Armand Toussaint. Levy’s works were widely exhibited at the French Salons in the 1870s-1890s, where the artist received a third-class prize in 1889. “Salome” is a late 19th-century sculpture signed to base. It features a standing female figure holding a sword in her hands.
Lot #89: Chinese 8-Panel Coromandel Screen
Estimated value: $1,500-$2,500
This carved Chinese Coromandel screen comes from the Upper East Side collection of Asian arts. It is beautifully painted with a figural courtyard scene below smaller scenes of landscapes in the form of fans. The screen is composed of eight panels, 96.25" by 18.25" each.
