How to Protect Art Prints During Transit in Three Steps

How to Protect Art Prints During Transit in Three Steps

Often made on paper, unframed art prints cannot chip or brittle during transportation. They also take up little space if packed efficiently, which reduces the shipping cost. However, these advantages do not mean that art prints, especially valuable ones, do not require gentle handling. But do not worry – preparing art prints for shipping is a piece of cake once you learn the basics. Fine Art Shippers has created an easy-to-follow guide to explain how to protect art prints with minimal effort.

How to Protect Art Prints: A Three-Step Guide

Proper packaging is essential if you want your items to be delivered unharmed. There is a tried-and-true method that never fails, which consists of the following three steps.

Find the Right Tube

Finding a suitable tube is one of the most important things you can do to ensure the security of your prints. Ideally, a tube should be made of sturdy, quality material and be approximately 2-4 inches longer than your print so that there is space for the filling. As for the diameter, it will depend on the size of your art piece, but make sure the tube is not too narrow because rolling the print too tightly might damage it.

Use Protective Filling

The next thing to keep in mind is that your print needs a protective covering. Glassine paper is the best option out there, as it is air-, water-, and grease-proof. Wrap your print in it and add some paper on the bottom and top ends of the tube to make sure that the print does not shift during transportation.

If you don’t have glassine paper, there are other affordable and accessible packaging options. Kraft paper or silicone release paper are both suitable, but you need to remember that the former will not protect your art piece from high humidity or water.

Add Shipment Information

After you seal the caps on both ends, print the shipping info and stick it on the tube. Make sure to clarify what labelling information is required in your state/ country to prevent the loss of your precious package.
