What Is “Luminous” About?

Vian Borchert describes “LUMINOUS” as an exploration of light and its connection to hope, renewal, and contemplation. Defining her art as a form of visual poetry, the artist brings together many of the elements that have become central to her practice. The exhibition is dominated by atmospheric blue abstractions that blur the boundaries between landscape and emotion. Borchert draws inspiration from the sea, sky, and meditative qualities of nature, inviting viewers into moments of stillness and reflection.

Rather than depicting specific places, the paintings create open, luminous environments shaped by intuition, nostalgic memories, lyrical color, and expressive brushwork. This approach gives viewers space to form their own associations and emotional responses. In “LUMINOUS,” light becomes more than a visual effect; it serves as a metaphor for clarity, resilience, and inner awakening.

Blue as the Visual Language of Vian Borchert

Blue can be considered a defining element of Vian Borchert’s visual language. According to the exhibition statement, the color reflects both the vastness of the natural world and the inner spaces where memory, imagination, and hope reside. In “LUMINOUS,” blue works together with light and expressive brushwork to create paintings that feel both meditative and uplifting.

The exhibition’s title also reflects Borchert’s fascination with light as both a physical presence and a symbol of optimism. Together, light and color create atmospheric compositions that encourage viewers to pause, reflect, and find beauty even in uncertain moments.

Works to Enjoy

Among the works in “LUMINOUS,” several stand out for the different ways they reflect Vian Borchert’s artistic language. Floral Mist (2022) is highlighted by Artsy as the exhibition’s “Collector’s Favourite,” while Columns of the Temple of Apollo (2025) and A Sea of Flora (2022) offer two different takes on the artist’s connection to nature. Together, these works show how Borchert moves between atmospheric abstraction, natural imagery, and expressive color while maintaining the contemplative quality that runs throughout the exhibition.

These works demonstrate Vian Borchert’s ability to transform elements inspired by nature and the surrounding world into expressive, atmospheric compositions. Together with the rest of the selection, they capture the central idea behind “LUMINOUS”: the enduring presence of light and its ability to evoke hope, reflection, and renewal.
