At Fine Art Shippers, we frequently ship fine art from the United States to Colombia where we work with many dealers, artists, and collectors. We love this country, and we love its diverse art scene that is now as rich as never before. Not so long ago, our team had a pleasure of visiting Bogota and Medellin, two beautiful Colombian cities that are simply full of art. Not only are there many noteworthy contemporary art galleries, such as DIBS by Culture Shock Colombia, Sastoque Gallery, and AH Fine Art, but there are also many amazing public art pieces that can be found right on the streets. In particular, you should definitely visit Plaza Botero in Medellin. This impressive open-air museum is entirely dedicated to the work of Fernando Botero, the most recognized living artist of Latin America.
Fernando Botero
Fernando Botero is a Colombian figurative artist born in Medellin in 1932. His gorgeous artworks are easily recognized due to the artist’s signature style that represents a perfect combination of humor and political criticism reflected in the depiction of various figures in exaggerated volume. This distinctive style, which is usually called “Boterismo,” has deservedly placed Botero on the top of the Latin American art scene and made him one of the world’s most influential living artists.
For today, sculptures and paintings by Fernando Botero can be found in many museums and galleries worldwide, not to mention an array of public art installations in the United States, Colombia, France, Spain, Germany, Israel, Singapore, and other countries. As it has been already said, one of the most notable collections of Botero’s art is located right in the center of Medellin, in a fantastic open-air museum known as Plaza Botero. Featuring 23 monumental sculptures by Fernando Botero, it is, without a doubt, a must-visit art destination in Medellin and Colombia as a whole. Very recommended!
