When it comes to JD Malat Gallery, you can always expect something out of the box. The London-based gallery never fails to choose stories that speak to one’s soul, and the new solo exhibition of the Colombian artist Santiago Parra, which is titled “Spark of Fire,” is no exception.
Drawing from creation myths, Santiago Parra makes his artistic practice the subject. The artist is particularly known for his abstract pieces imbued with his creative energy, which can be clearly seen in the energetic splashes of black paint on large-scale white canvases. Parra’s works are all made from instinct and impulse, speaking to something primal and historical within us.
A Solo Show of the Colombian Artist Santiago Parra at JD Malat Gallery
In his new body of work consisting of 14 pieces, Santiago Parra brings the very process of creation to the forefront, constructing a meta-narrative about both his artwork and the nature of creation. In “Sparks of Fire,” one can trace the birth and life of the world: ocean torn asunder and about to give way to land, powerful geyser springing out with force, and the vast expansion of cosmic dark matter.
The series was inspired by Jackson Pollock’s “Eyes in the Heat.” Parra took the emotions he felt when he first saw the painting in Venice and managed to translate them onto canvas in a way that was uniquely and unmistakably his. The Colombian artist let his brush move autonomously, guided only by instinct as he entered a state of hyper-awareness. Allowing emotions and feelings to flow through him freely, he separated himself from the rational and transcended onto a plane where art existed without borders and constraints. The result is truly impressive. His works are distinguished by chaotic and deliberate brush strokes. Smooth lines meet with rigid, harsh angles, producing dynamicity that can only be achieved by becoming completely in tune with the world and self.
“Sparks of Fire” by Santiago Parra is a show you cannot miss. If you happen to be in London, take your time to visit JD Malat Gallery and experience Parra’s art firsthand. His new solo exhibition will be on view from March 7 through April 6, 2024.
