February is Black History Month in the USA and Canada. This month-long event was established in North America to revisit and commemorate the African American legacy in all aspects of the continent’s economy, culture, history, and development throughout the centuries. The period is marked by festive events, educational programs, and art exhibitions exploring the history of Black people in this part of the world, from the dark age of Black enslavement in the 17th century until the present-day unique Black lifestyle and culture.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art Joins the Celebration of Black History Month
The Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) is one of the many art entities that join the celebration of Black History Month and offer unique programming for all people interested in exploring the African American legacy in the creative field. The Museum is committed to its Equity Agenda and holds a variety of events within its Heritage Month Series to celebrate the contribution of various cultural groups to the unique present-day fabric of American lifestyle, identity, and culture.
Notably, the start of Black History Month events coincides with the final days of the exhibition of 28 Black and African diasporic contemporary artists, titled “The Time is Always Now: Artists Reframe the Black Figure.” The exhibition is available for viewing until February 9, 2025, offering a unique perspective on the present-day conceptualization of Black identity through figurative art, painting, and sculpture.
Events Scheduled for February at the PMA
The February programming at the PMA includes many important events that will shed light on various aspects of African American influences on US art and culture. All events will be held on February 1-28, 2025, with the Family Festival scheduled for February 2 and the large-scale Friday Night Celebration planned for February 7.
The Family Festival will be held with the participation of the artist Akria Gordon, culminating with a dance party with DJ Jamz and Poetic Selections. The Friday Night Celebration will be a large-scale festivity with art creation workshops from Yannick Lowery, live music by DJ Killsing, and a unique culinary accompaniment of Darnel’s Cakes and Stir restaurant. There are also two Friday Night Lounges scheduled for February 14 and February 21, both promising a fun night out with live music, delicious treats, and art tours.
Fine Art Shippers, as a corporate partner of the PMA, is excited about the forthcoming events and will surely attend the scheduled events to pay tribute to Black art heritage.
