Fine Art Shippers wishes you a safe and happy 4th of July! Independence Day is, without a doubt, one of the most notable holidays in the history of our country because it marked the long-awaited independence of the United States from the United Kingdom in 1776. To celebrate this joyful occasion, let’s learn some interesting facts about Independence Day that you might have never known about.
5 Interesting Facts about Independence Day
1. Every July 4th, a hot-dog eating competition is held at Nathan’s Famous restaurant in Coney Island, NY. The contest has been held since 1916 and has become an integral part of the holiday celebrations, attracting top competitive eaters from around the world.
2. Some believe that President Zachary Taylor died five days after Independence Day due to the copious amounts of cherries and iced milk he consumed during the celebration, which triggered his health condition. With that said, the true cause of his death is still unclear.
3. The following fact might appear as a rather grim one, but it is true and fascinating. Believe it or not, Presidents James Monroe, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson all died on Independence Day. These historical events have since then been overgrown with theories: some even believe that the US presidents stayed alive until July 4 on purpose.
4. Before 1870, Independence Day was not widely celebrated. It only became an official holiday for federal employees in the 19th century and was acknowledged as a paid holiday in 1938.
5. To keep one’s business open on July 4 was seen as unpatriotic in the times before the Civil War. This fact seems especially bizarre to us today, considering that most US stores and restaurants have special offers during the holiday weekend.
