Filtered Identity: A New Thrilling Exhibition by Tigran Tsitoghdzyan

Filtered Identity

On September 19, the Armenian Museum of America in Watertown, MA, opened “Filtered Identity,” a new exhibition of paintings by Tigran Tsitoghdzyan, curated by Ryann Casey. The official opening took place on the Museum’s third floor. The iconic series of photorealistic paintings created in the artist’s signature style will be on view through February 23, 2025.

Tigran Tsitoghdzyan, a Master of Photorealistic Painting

Tigran Tsitoghdzyan is a natural-born artist who started displaying his paintings internationally at the age of 10. After obtaining a formal education in arts in Yerevan in 1999, Tigran honed his technique and style at École Cantonale d’Art du Valais, Switzerland. He also spent a couple of years in Europe and South Africa, settling in NYC in 2009. At present, Tigran Tsitoghdzyan has two permanent studios: one in Yerevan and one in New York.

The recognizable style of Tigran Tsitoghdzyan is a photorealistic painting technique performed in a black-and-white color palette. The artist skillfully uses overlapping shapes, tonal shadows, and metaphoric layering of photorealistic images in his art, which leaves a lasting impression on the viewers and creates a unique emotional effect that photos lack.

Tigran Tsitoghdzyan’s fascination with female nature is deeply felt in his experimentation with the diversity of human shapes. In some paintings, the artist divides a female face into two symmetrical halves; in others, he narrows the female face or deconstructs the body to reconstruct it in a more symbolic plane. Every piece by Tigran is esthetically enchanting, emotionally moving, and thought-provoking.
