UrbanGlass – The Largest Artist Glass Studio in the U.S.

Glass art refers to many different artworks that are fully or partially made of glass. These include everything from glass jewelry and wall hangings to glass sculptures and monumental glass art installations. Glass art is impressive, and it’s really great that New York is full of talented artists working with this versatile medium. Moreover, New York is home to UrbanGlass, the first artist glass studio in the United States.

UrbanGlass

UrbanGlass is the leading glass-blowing facility in the New York metropolitan area and America’s largest studio accommodating almost 400 artists who create using glass. It was founded by Joe Upham, Erik Erikson, and Richard Yelle in 1977 and at that time was known as the New York Experimental Glass Workshop. Over the years, UrbanGlass has grown to become the most famous artist glass studio that is open to the public.

At different times, UrbanGlass was home to Dale Chihuly, whose incredible glass art installations dazzle with their whimsical forms and dreamy color compositions, Toots Zynsky, Karen LaMonte, Beth Lipman, Maya Lin, and many other prominent artists working with glass. Besides, UrbanGlass offers an amazing education program that now serves over 1,000 students, as well as a scholarship program with awards based on financial need and artistic merit.

If you love glass art installations, glass sculptures, or any other artworks made of glass, you should definitely visit UrbanGlass studio and the Agnes Varis Arts Center that serves as a gallery and store. Both of them are located in the historic Strand Theatre in Downtown Brooklyn, at 647 Fulton Street.
